Dodos Hockey Skates to a Tie!

Hey hockey fans! A comment was left "anonymously" mentioning that Dodos Hockey doesn't get mentioned anymore. Well, considering there has only been one post since the last time hockey was written about, we appreciate you paying attention, but enough with the dramatics. If Dodos Hockey had someone willing to be the correspondent and report the stats and a game review including photos, perhaps more would be mentioned. It takes a lot more effort to produce a write up than to just click a couple buttons and read, especially if we are unable to attend the game. Thank you for being sympathetic to the cause.

With that being said, Dodos Hockey (1-5-2) skated to a 3-3 tie on Sunday against the Acme Warriors. Trailing 2-1 in the second period, the Dodos took the lead, 3-2, after goals by Dylan Mlcoch and Brian Silvey. The Warriors scored to tie the game, 3-3 and force shootouts.

Neither team would score in shootouts, leaving the Dodos and Warriors in a 3-3 tie. Dodos Hockey will be off this weekend in observance of Memorial Day, but action will commence on Sunday, June 5th at 9PM, when the Dodos face The Other Team at Iceoplex Simi on the NHL Rink.

All Tied Up!

At the midway point to the 2011 summer season, the Dodos found themselves in a two-way tie for first with the Durham Bulls with a record of 8-1. The two teams would face each other last Sunday for sole possession of first place.

Both teams have winning streaks that started early in the season (Dodos 7 games, Bulls 8 games) and both teams sent their ace pitchers to the mound in what would be the toughest challenge for the Dodos all season. Eleven innings later, the Dodos and Bulls would still remain tied for first place, when the game ran out of time, resulting in a 4-4 tie.

The Bulls drew first blood, scoring in the bottom of the first inning, but the Dodos tied the game in the second when Eric Ross (playing his first game in at least three seasons) lead off the inning with a single, and later scored on a single by pitcher Steve Cole and a throwing error.

The Bulls would score a run in the third, to take a 2-1 lead. The Bulls' ace and candidate for the Cy Young Award, DJ Cook, shut the Dodos down for the next four innings, spreading six hits and three walks over seven innings while recording five strikeouts.

Trailing 2-1 with one out in the top of the seventh, Chris Hems drew his second walk of the game and cleanup hitter, Charles Dethloff doubled to bring Eric Ross to the plate. Ross, substituting for catcher, Andy Gerber promptly belted a 2-2 pitch to right center field, giving the Dodos a 4-2 lead. Cole would strike out the side, but give up a run on a double and bloop single to close the gap for the Bulls, 4-3.

Bulls' relief pitcher, Collin Ozar would take the hill in the eighth, shutting down the Dodos and keeping the game close. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Bulls' cleanup hitter, Eric Pryor, launched a game-tying solo home run to left field.

The Bulls would threaten with bases loaded in the ninth and tenth, but the Dodos held them from scoring with two fantastic running catches in deep, center field by Hems.

After three hours and 11 innings, the game would end in a tie, solving nothing for the teams or the league. The Dodos (8-1-1) have Memorial Day weekend off, but will be back in action Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Sylmar High at 2PM in a rematch against the Dogs (4-6).
