DODOS FIGHT FOR FIRST WIN!

Sunday, October 2, 2011

The Dodos Hockey team picked up where they left off at the end of last season, fighting for a victory. The Dodos struck early and often, out shooting the Pond Stars 15-5 in the opening period. At 4:52 of the period, Jeff Hewitt took a shot that deflected off the Stars' goalie and went between his legs. William Strayhorn swooped on the puck and pushed it into the net for the first goal of the new season. The Dodos dominated the first period, scoring two more unanswered goals, one from A.J. Tarpley (10:07), the other from Pat Heninger (13:50). The Dodos looked confident at the end of the first period, leading 3-0.

Tarpley continued to pour it on the Pond Stars, scoring his second goal of the game (3:03) to give the Dodos a 4-1 lead. The Pond Stars struck back, sneaking the puck by Dodos goalie, Chris Barrera. It was Barrera's first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury in early March.

Leading 4-1, Dodos forward Jim Partaker became tangled with a Pond Star player. Both players fell to the ice and when they arose, both threw the gloves off and chaos ensued. Amidst the crowd of players, one of the referees grabbed Jeff Hewitt by the back of the shoulder pads and whipped him to the ice with a considerable amount of force. Hewitt immediately bounced up, more fired up than ever, but wisely acted calm as he collected himself en route to the penalty box to serve eight total minutes. The Dodos found themselves facing a 5-on-3 power play to defend to start the final period.

The Pond Stars took advantage of the power play opportunity, scoring 48 seconds into the third period. But, Tarpley answered with a short-handed goal, a chip shot by the goalie that would give Tarpley a hat trick (2:00) and the Dodos a commanding 5-2 lead. The Stars scored their third and final goal on the remaining power play, but the Dodos would seal the victory with goals by Dylan Mlcoch (10:58) and Hewitt (14:18). The Dodos welcome Barrera (1-0) back, controlling the puck and out shooting the Pond Stars 39-18. Barrera made 15 saves in his return to the Nation.
