Errors, Blown Calls Lead to Dodos' Loss!

Sunday June 12, 2011

Shane Shoemaker got the start for the Dodos and got a ton of ground balls, but the defense committed a season-high eight errors and the base umpire (PCBL League President mind you) blew five calls to combine for the Dodos' second loss of the season.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third inning, a throwing error and two hits led to a 4-1 Dogs' lead. Then, with two out, a routine flyball was hit to center field. Matty Lane went back to make the catch and as he was bringing his glove down, the ball fell out and was ruled an error. The play was clearly a catch, but the umpire felt otherwise, leading to two errors by Tony Ross and five more runs, giving the Dodos a 9-1 deficit.

The Dodos offense never really got into a groove. Just when it seemed something was coming together, a blown-call at third base and two at first dispelled any chances of a rally the Dodos attempted.

Shoemaker pitched six innings, scattering 11 hits and 12 runs (5ER) and striking out three. Steve Cole and Dustin Burke continued their torrid hitting with 3-4 and 2-4 days, respectively. Jeff Hewitt was 2-3 with a triple and Lane also went 2-3. The last four batters in the lineup were a combined 0-14.

The loss and wins by the Bulls (10-1-1) and White Sox (10-2) plummeted the Dodos (9-2-1) into third place. The Dodos face the Loons (3-10) in a wood bat Father's Day game on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at 2PM at Poly High School. Troy Warn, Sr. will be making his first start as a Dodo.
